Oh the weather. Driving to the start from Vancouver, I encountered snow and had thoughts of turning around. However I kept going and made it to Good Sam Hospital without having snow and ice sticking to the road. Once there a very few walkers showed up. In fact only 13 - 8 for the 10 km and 5 for the 5 km. When we took the group photo at the start - SUNSHINE and a balmy 34 degrees. Notice the shadows on the ground. The sun did not last very long as clouds came back very soon after the start but it did not start snowing again until about the 8 km mark. By the time we were finished the sun came back out. 10 km walk is a new route that goes by many of the new challenges. We made a few diversions one in particular as Ethel had never seen the echo at Pioneer Square. Turns out that no one had talked to the wall in Pioneer Plaza so all took turns. It is amazing the first time you try it. You missed a good walk if you stayed home in the warm. Dick Wow, 60 people today! 01/14/2012
Unfortunately, the very slow walkers never did get to Oaks Bottom, but we had a wonderful walk and it only sprinkled while we were out there. We had Larry and Rita with us and they knew exactly where we were when we crossed over the RR tracks. We only went about a 1/2 a block and Rita said "there's nothing up there", so then Larry took over. He got us back to Andover and the right turns, and we had no problems from then on in. Regina was with us and her new walker, but I forgot his name already (that's because I become so old today!) Even though we are slow, we had the best time taking pictures of all of the things we think you guys missed on the fast walk, but you can see them here. We had a great time and after the Merrywalkers took me to lunch at the Jade Restaurant where we splurged on garlic shrimp and birthday cake. But...tomorrow is really my birthday, so if it doesn't snow, maybe we could do it again, please..... Happy Birthday to me 01/14/2012

I wasn't able to make it for the walk yesterday - but just looking at the pictures, it looked really cold...in fact there is one picture in there of the ice. Sandra did say that she took the picture of that really tall tree, because there were guys way up at the top of it cutting. Anyway, if anyone would like to add to this blog just send me an e-mail and I would love to post it. Tomorrow the walk is at Oaks Bottom, so we will see you there at 10 a.m. Happy Birthday, Mary 01/11/2012

Before we even left the house, Sandra said, "boy it's windy out there today." I looked out and said, "it's not windy here, it just must be in the higher elevations, and we are walking in Portland, so it won't be windy." Well that was the first mistake of the day. It was absolutely gorgeous out there today. Blue sky, puffy clouds, and the wind made me feel like I was back in Chicago. Geesh, was it windy, but it make the walk feel so good. Your hair blew around and you didn't build up a sweat. Sandra said she didn't have to be back in Sherwood till later so we could do lunch. Second mistake, I was so excited, we could finally go to the Thai place. I said I was so happy it was just her and me, because the rest of our usual carpool would never go there. Yipee! Well the place was closed, so we ended up at even another Mexican place, the Adobe Rose. Let's see; everyone loved their lunches. Most everyone ordered the halibut tacos, but I decided to go for the enchilladas. That was the third mistake. When you see everyone else not ordering what you are ordering, should be your first clue. I did enjoy the chocolate mint after. Everyone really enjoyed their selections, but if I were to go there again, I'd pass on mine and go for the tacos. By the way, we had 49 walkers and 20 of them joined us for lunch. But this Saturday I get to redeem it all. We are doing this all over again, same time and place, but the Thai Place will be open and I'm going. I might not have a lot in my car for the carpool, but I hope someone joins us, and if not, there's always Fat Albert's. Happy Belated Birthday to Judy, January 8th 01/10/2012
Monday with the Snails 01/10/2012
We actually had two more walkers come a bit later and met us at the view point, Mary Rose and Hanni, so we had a nice group. I think all of us were really relieved to have all of the holidays behind us so of course we started talking vacations. Mike is headed off to Savannah, Carolyn is off to the Yucatan Peninsula, Hanni and Lynette just got back from a short trip to Seattle. We had a new retiree join us this week, Mary and pretty soon we will have Bonnie.. We missed Mary Ann this week, but she will be back on Monday (she's entertaining guests from out of town) and her and I will be taking off for the "Windy City" on the Ides of February. We also have the Gorge walks this summer and I'm starting to make plans for Coupeville in September. The year has begun. Sunday at Salmon Creek 01/08/2012
Today there were 34 walkers that braved the chilly January day, for the Heights Neighbourhood Walk in Vancouver. It started at Starbucks; quite a few walkers got a coffee and used it for hand warmers for the walk .. I mean to drink. Regardless if we were at Oregon or Pasedena/California it was a was a very dense foggy day. The 10km walkers did not walk excessively fast, and did really good at keeping together (thanks to the weather); but it did make the views of the Columbia River "not" available. Which also may have created a scary site while we did appear "out of nowhere" to the individuals that were out walking their dogs. There were parks, schools, and even a cemetary (that had a star above a tree, baby christmas trees, ponsettas, candy canes and wreaths). It was a really nice walk, and great to catch up with all the details of everyone's 2011 and plans for 2012. --Angela | SNAILS MEET
