Not much wildlife this week at the Refuge, but maybe with the rain coming in, we might see more next weekend.  We had 8 Snails out there this weekend.  We've been savoring our last weeks at the Refuge before we move to the path at Cedar Creek and start heading downtown.  It's been nice having Barb and Carolyn with us most of the time to point out the different things at the Refuge.  Both of them volunteer in the gift shop and they are our resource when we walk out there.

It was a bit chilly when we started out, but it did improve when we started walking.  What fun meeting up with the other clubs.  When I first moved here from Chicago i thought I would never go anywhere when anyone would know me.  It was so exciting the first time some said "hi Jane" at the store, and now, every where you walk, whether it be in Sherwood, Astoria, Jenkins Estate, we run into so many friends. Check the photos out at the picture tab.  As far as Merrywalkers go, there was Mary and then Tom and Judy (but we only saw them as we were leaving).  What a great time.

Stopping for a break and munching on oatmeal cookies.  Check out Leroy's shirt, 2009 Portland Marathon--CONGRATULATIONS! Thanks to the Thursday Walkers for coming to visit us, it's always fun having you and you picked such a beautiful day.  By the way, the cookies are a variation and you can find the recipe under FAQs and just click on the Merrywalkers Recipes.  The pictures will be under the picture tab.

What a treat.  The Merrywalkers headed over to Anila and Nare's house for a cooking lesson.  We all learned how to make a true Indian dish.  All of us that came were busy taking notes and checking out how it was done while dining on wine and just being in our private cooking class.  We also had a wonderful salad, beans, rice and green beans with our meal.  Once we have all of the recipes figured out we'll post them in our recipe section. Take a look at the rest of the pictures under the pictures tab.

Snails 10/06/2009

Today it really did feel like fall out there.  Everyone had on their jackets and some even wore gloves.  We saw a hawk and a few birds and of course we were able to see and hear the geese heading south.
We welcomed Diane to our group today.  She is a volkswalker who has been having problems with her feet and decided to try the snails.  We headed down to the coffee shop where we met up with Lou Ann, who just got back from Chicago.

Lois Smith, Mary Ann, Carolyn Evenson, Nari and Anila all met Laura Foster for her Beverly Cleary tour.  It was supposed to rain, but we lucked out.  There had to be at least 200 people at the walk and we were able to see the house where she grew up, the states of Henry and Romona, and we even heard a passage from one of her books about the new boots.

Dick Baker 10/01/2009

By now, you must have heard, that Dick Baker had a fall in Beaverton and fell off of a curb.  He ended up breaking his wrist and needed surgery.  I wrote and asked him for an update and here it is:

Things went good with the surgery but I was told to keep the cast dry.  When I walked last Wednesday,  it was sweaty inside the cast so I was told not to walk 5 or 10 kms.  Very little pain unless I do something dumb.   I will get the stitches out next week so then will see what they give me.  I hope it is a removable cast so I can bathe etc. better.  Now I shower with my cast in the air and a bag over it.  Barbara helps get my left side before I get in as I can't reach it.

I'm sure he would appreciate any e-mails or cards.
