Today was a beautiful walk around Lake Sacagawea.  The water lilies in full bloom.  The sun was shinning but not hot. Also they are getting ready for their timber carnival.   I brought 3 awards for Steve F. and Mary Elise D.  and took photos of them with Ed and Sam. There was a challenge in January for the walkers who were the first walkers to do a YRE.   Steve had five and Mary E had 4 plus Mary E did 11 YRE's.  Anyone who did over 10 got a certificate. Food was great and we had 17 at one table. ---- Dick

15 Snails today 06/28/2010

We divided into three groups.  The fast group took off and did the whole loop around the Refuge and finished in an hour.  The slower group (the Snails) took the nice easy route out to our viewpoint and back.  Then there was Sally and Barb, who went back for her binoculars and ended up seeing a deer and 2 fawns.  After we all headed for coffee.  Linda came today for the first time all the way from Gaston.  Karen introduced us to her a few months ago and she joined up, but this was her first walk.  Welcome Linda!  We are already gearing up for the week.  Thursday is tai chi, and then Sunday, the 4th, we are heading over to Vancouver for their walk.  One of our snails, Barb is graduating to a volkswalker this weekend and we are giving her the books so she can start  keeping track.  So then Mary Rose, our other snail, decided to graduate too!  So our car is full for Sunday and we are leaving from my house at 8

Sunday Parkways Walk 06/27/2010

Another great day for walking and there seemed to be a bit more shade.  The roses were in full bloom and it was a great day to explore the garden.  Of course I parked on the "wrong" side of the park, but it was nice to see Barb and Noreen at the Start Table.  I opted for the 5k today, but I still ran into quite a few walkers.  It is so much fun seeing the streets filled with bicyclists and walkers. Portland's finest did a great job of keeping the cars at bay.  As the bicyclists whizzed by all of a sudden I hear "Hey you!"  Here's Antonella on her bike. Some of the things we saw on the route were lots of sleeping toddlers in their bike-mobiles, volunteers who not only had their happy faces on but even wore funny hats, kids blowing bubbles and one guy passing out freeze pops to the bikers and the walkers.  The weather was perfect.  Along the way I passed the Baptist Church and asked them why they didn't have a BBQ dinner offered, he said he would ask the pastor and who knows, maybe next year we'll get some good southern BBQ!

We couldn't wait for the cold weather to end and the rain to go away, but damn, it was hot out there!  Last year they had over 300 walkers over the 2 days and with this weather, I'm sure they will be even more this year.  We met people from Bend, Salem and all parts of Portland.  But it sure did feel good to get home and take your shoes off and drop down and have a cold Pepsi.  There is nothing like going out for a great walk with great friends, but there is nothing better than coming home on a hot day! By the way, the Park down by the water was really neat.  Our thanks to Valley Volks Club for putting on the walk.  Tomorrow we head over to Portland for their first of the Portland Parks Walks.  See you there!

What a great day for a walk.  We had 37 in the 10k, 8 in the 5k and then another 8 in the slow 5k.  After we headed over to Macaroni Grill for lunch and to celebrate Dick's birthday.  Nick, the Kelly's grandson, joined us today for the walk and after, we let him eat all of the leftover birthday cake.
Saturday we are walking by the Lake Oswego Art Fair and then Sunday is the first of the Portland Parks Walks.

Walking with the Snails and Mckenna! 06/21/2010

Lynette's granddaughter Mckenna joined us for the walk today.  She was the proprietor of the binoculars and kept us all informed of the blue jays and slugs.  It's always fun to be able to see things through the eyes of a child.  The flowers were magnificent.  I had more pictures, but would you believe, I forgot to put the memory card in the camera so thankfully the new camera was able to grab some of the pictures in it's memory.  Geesh, this getting old is something else!

Saturday at the Gorge with Starr 06/20/2010

Today I tagged along with Fred & Sharon Fisher, from Anacortes to sweep the Starvation Creek Trail. Lots of interesting history on this 10 K. mixed in with more beautiful waterfalls & scenery. There was an old oven used by the Chinese laborers, to bake their bread, that worked on the Columbia River Hwy, then came a GIANT ant hills full of thousands or ants...made you wiggle just watching them! We meet up with some walkers who were still enjoying the walks & taking their time. We entered a camp ground & made our way down to the Columbia to catch a glimpse of some wind surfers. It was a nice way to end a wonderful exploreation & adventure of the Columbia River Gorge! A "BIG" Thank You to everyone who helped the Columbia River Volksport Club make this event as spectacular as the scenery.

What a great day to hike in the woods.  Sandy and Starr took off for the 25k at Eagle Creek and Mary Ann and I headed off to do our thing at Wachela (6k) and we decided we would do Multnomah after we complete the new "Starr Weight Watcher Program."  She doesn't know about it yet, but we'll let her know soon!
After our hike we headed over to the start point to sit around and catch up on news with Lena and Carmella.  Then we did some fish "mongering" with a couple of kiids and ended up with 2 steelheads and 2 smaller ones, and now we are getting ready to head over for the potlucki.  It is so much fun to get together with EVERYONE!  Last night we headed over to the Best Western to see who was around, we we caught up with the Mossbacks who had wine and chocolate covered strawberries.  You can see that Starr has her work cut out for her, huh?
Hopefully I can get the pictures up.  We are trying to remember names, but if you can give us the picture and give us the names, it will help us in tagging.  The connection isn't the greatest, but what can you do?  Everyone will still be out here tomorrow, so head on up and join the fun!
